Rod wins Club Points

On Tuesday 28th March ten Petroleum members took part in a club points competion. We managed to complete 7 of the disciplines in the 2 hour slot available. This was a great test of our curling, and especially the “wick in” shot proved tricky for some. Rod Mackenzie came top with 34 points, followed by Ian Grigor on 31. Sarah Glidden was close behind on 29 points. Well done to all who took part.

Full results are on the competitions page.

Philip is top Third

The Petroleum thirds league was completed this week. Congratulations to Philip Scott who was the top skip, winning 4 of the 6 games in a double round robin. Philip’s team included Karen, Alistair, Angie, Erika, and Ian. The runner up was Lianne. Results are on the competitions page.

Ian wins Spring League

Congratulations to Ian Grigor who with his team of Philip, Karen, Alistair, and Angie has won the club Spring League. Bill Morrison was runner up, losing out with one fewer end. This completes a double for Ian, who also won the autumn league.

Full results are on the competition page.

Petroleum vs USA

On Saturday 14th January a team from Aberdeen Petroleum played against the touring US men’s team. Petroleum were represented by Roy (skip), Bill, Rod, and Giles in an afternoon fixture. Petroleum won 6-3 after 8 ends. The usual pleasantries and gifts were exchanged and we all attended the evening dinner at Curl Aberdeen, joined by Rosemary Morrison and Joanna Mackey. A very enjoyable occasion for the four of us. We were one of the few success stories of the day, as overall there was a deficit of 21 shots to the USA after the 8 games were completed.

Ugie Bonspiel

Congratulations to Ronnie, Philip, Lianne, and Finlay who represented Petroleum in the Ugie Bospiel on Saturday 25th February. The team won all three of their games, and narrowly lost out on ends to finish runners-up.

Christmas Bonspiel

Fifteen members and their guests enjoyed a Christmas bobspiel at Curl Aberdeen on Sunday 11th December. Christmas jumpers were much in evidence, as well as Philip’s elf costume. Teams playes two 4-end games before enjoying an excellent steak pie supper in the lounge. This year there was a family flavour to the event with three members of the Scott family and four members of the Mackey family taking part – a big welcome to all newcomers.

Congratulations to Rod’s team which included Steven, Angie, and Tamara, who came first after winning both of their games.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Ian wins Autumn League

Last night Ian Grigor won the Petroleum League. Following a triple round competition Ian won 6 games and lost 3, ending up 2 points clear of second placed skip Ronnie Whyte whom he defeated in the final game. Full results are on the competitions page.

Well done to all of Ian’s team which included Morty, Richard, Giles, and Rosemary.

First Bonspiel of the Season

Aberdeen Petroleum took part in the first club bonspiel of the 22-23 season, which was held at Curl Aberdeen on Saturday 29th October. The format as usual involved three 6-end games, with lunch and snacks in between. Petroleum enjoyed a close game against Banchory (won 9-8) in their first game, before losing out in the second game to Laurencekirk (lost 4-6). A strong performance in the third game against Aberdeen Juniors (won 9-1) left Petroleum in overall runner-up position, behind Meldrum and Daviot who won all three of their games.

Congratulations to skip Rod and his team of Phil, Karen, and Giles ; together with Tamara who played the first game in place of Karen.

The second bonspiel will be on 3rd December.

AGM and Prizegiving

15 members and their guests attended the club AGM and prizegiving at the home of Neva and Roy Haites House on Sunday 1st May. Meeting minutes will be circulated separately.

Because of covid disruption there were trophies and prizes from the past three seasons to be awarded. This meant that most members were fortunate to receive a prize ; and Rosemary was a winner four times ! Although the weather looked doubtful initially it soon cleared up, and by mid afternoon Bieldside was enjoying clear blue skies for the customary garden sports and barbecue. Roy demonstrated his table curling game, Ronnie organised table tennis, while more sedate members enjoyed a game of boules. A great time was had by all, and many thanks to Neva and Roy for their hospitality.

Club Bonspeil Win

Today 26th March Curl Aberdeen held their fourth and final club bonspiel of the season. Eight teams competed, each representing one of the local curling clubs. The format as before was three 6-end games, with opponents for the first game drawn at random and thereafter following the schenkel system. Petroleum’s team was skipped by Philip Scott and ensured victory by winning all three of their games, beating St George’s, Laurencekirk, and Meldrum & Daviot. Well done to Philip and his team, which included Lianne McGregor, Malcolm Watson, and Finlay McGregor.

Thank you to Curl Aberdeen for the lovely ice and for a very enjoyable day.
