Petroleum success in Province

With the conclusion of the 17-18 season for NE Province competitions we are pleased to report three wins for Petroleum teams.

Bill Morrison’s team of Rosemary, Phil S, Phil T, and Rod won the Province A division in a close final game against Banchory 2.   The whole competition came down to the last end of this game, in which Bill managed a steal to take the end, the game, and the league.  Outstanding.  Bill’s team will now represent NE Province in the inter-province competition next season.

Apologies to Rosemary who is missing from the above pic.

The Province B league was won by Ian Grigor, ably supported by Rhiann, Chris, Sarah, and Fraser G – sorry no photo is available for this team who are all a bit shy.

The Province singles competition this season took the form of a round robin league, giving more games than the previous knockout format.  Once again Petroleum players were victorious with our team led by Rod MacKenzie lifting the trophy.  Rod’s singles team included Ian, Ronnie, Dillan, Phil S, Sarah, and Rhiann.  Well done all.

A full sweep for the club was prevented by Haddo CC, who beat Petroleum onto second place in the Double team competition.

This was a very strong performance for the club – well done to all the Petroleum members who contributed.  Prizes will be presented at the Province AGM on 26th April.

Dillan wins the Double (again)

Yes, super-skip Dillan Perras has topped the Petroleum Club league in both autumn and spring competitions for the second year running.   In the autumn competition Dillan was supported by Cheryl, Lorna, and Malcolm ; and his Spring team comprised Sarah, Neva, Phil Scott, and Karen.  Trophies will be presented at the club AGM on 13th May.  Can Dillan be beaten ? … any (legal) suggestions to the secretary please.

Congratulations to Dillan and to both of his teams.

World Juniors in Aberdeen

Last week Curl Aberdeen hosted the World Juniors Curling competition.  10 men’s teams and 10 ladies’ teams took part, with the Scottish ladies’ team being skipped by local girl Rebecca Morrison. The men’s team skipped by Ross Whyte won silver medals.  The competition was a great success, with many visitors commenting on how well the event had been organised by the local team led by Ian Mennie.

Many Petroleum members supported the event as volunteer stewards, drivers, or timekeepers.  However, the highlight from our club’s point of view came during the spectacular opening ceremony.  Teams were led onto the ice by piper Jamie Kindness and then after a couple of short speeches the ceremonial first stone was delivered by rink manager Tom Brewster and swept by club members Dave Edwards and Rhiann Macleod, with Claire Perras holding the broom.  The commentator reminded us that all four of these curlers have previously represented Scotland at international level.   Luke Perras had the honour of carrying the Scottish flag and leading the home teams onto the ice.

Rod is top third

Petroleum’s annual thirds competition took place on the 14th January.  The skips were members who normally play third in the club league, while the regular skips got a chance to practice their sweeping skills !

Four teams took part, in a format of three short games.  The skips were Rod, Lorna, Phil S, and Erika.  The teams were so well balanced that both first games were tied with the results being decided by last stone draws.  Congratulations to the winner Rod whose team of Rogan, Fraser, and Glynis won all their games in a tightly contested event.  Well done all.

Rhiann at Henderson Bishop

A team skipped by Petroleum’s Rhiann Macleod recently reached the final of the Henderson Bishop Ladies’ competition in Hamilton.  Having won the Aberdeen local event, Rhiann’s team of Claire Perras, Lorna Smith, and Kim Brewster traveled to Hamilton for the finals from 26thFeb till 1st March.  The finals involve a round robin in 4 sections followed by semis and then the overall final.  Rhiann won all 4 of her pool games before overcoming Ayr-2 in the semi final.  The Aberdeen team lost out in the final to Ayr-1 by a score of 6-5.  Well done for coming so close ladies.

Christmas Bonspiel

On Sunday 10th December 24 members and guests enjoyed the Petroleum Christmas bonspiel.  The teams managed to fit in three short games over one session, followed by a meal in the lounge.  This year’s winning team comprised Rod, Craig, Rogan, and Anne – congratulations to them.  Thank you to Iseabal for organising the prizes, and to Ryan who prepared an excellent meal for us.

Second Club Bonspiel

Curl Aberdeen held their second club bonspiel of the season on Saturday 25th November.  Petroleum’s team of Ian, Chris, Rod, Sarah, and Andy had a successful day winning all 3 of their 3 games.  Unfortunately this wasnt enough to win the competition as Meldrum & Daviot CC also won all their games and also won more ends.  But a second place (together with our first place from the first bonspiel) means that Petroleum is still well placed overall.  The third and final bonspiel will be held on 17th February.  Well done team !

Gold for Rhiann and Scotland

The 2017 World Mixed Curling Championship came to a close at Champery in Switzerland on Saturday.  After a tough week of Competition Scotland’s team of Grant Hardie, our own Rhiann Macleod, Billy Morton, and Barbara McFarlane beat Canada by 8-5 after an extra end to take gold.  WELL DONE RHIANN – another gong to add to her already impressive collection.

World Mixed Curling Championship 2017 Medal Presentation

About 15 members of Petroleum helped Rhiann to celebrate at a supper in the Dutch Mill on 24th October.  After being presented with a commemorative miniature stone Rhiann shared out an enormous cake and a good time was had by all.
