Congratulations to Petroleum skip Rhiann Macleod who has topped off her season in fine style by winning the Scottish Mixed Championship, which was held in Aberdeen on 11th-12th March 2017.  Rhiann played in Grant Hardie’s rink, the other 2 players being Billy Morton and Barbara Macfarlane.  Rhiann’s team won 2 out of their 3 pool games, then beat brother Scott Macleod’s team in the semis, before overcoming Craig Waddell’s team in the final.

This builds on Rhiann’s already impressive medal list having won the Scottish and World Juniors in 2011 (with Eve Muirhead), the Scottish ladies later the same year (with Anna Sloan), and the Scottish ladies again in 2014 (with Kerry Barr).

Rhiann and the team will now go on to the 2017 World Mixed Championship to be held at Champery in Switzerland in October – good luck from all at APCC !

 

On Sunday 5th march North East Province competed against West Fife as part of the Waldie Griffith, an RCCC inter-province competition that takes place each year.  Two of the four NE teams taking part were provided by Petroleum – the province teams skipped by Bill and Richard.

Bill’s team APCC1  peeled 6-6 with Dalgety Bay CC, and Richard’s team APCC2 beat Raith and Abbotshall CC 12-3.  Overall the North East beat West Fife by 36 -20.  Well done to all.

Results are still coming in from around the country, but current favourite for the Waldie Griffith Cup appears to be Lanarkshire Province, who beat Dundee by an amazing 49-22 across their 4 games.  The image below  shows the cup with its 1932 winners East Kilbride and Haremyres CC – curlers were better dressed in those days !

Aberdeen Petroleum came out narrowly on top on conclusion of the Province’s double team competition at Curl Aberdeen last week.

Five clubs entered “double” teams each comprising 8 players and the format was a round robin with each team playing 4 double games.  The special feature of this competition is that after 4 ends one of the teams swops over to the other sheet for the second half of the game, and games are decided by the combined total score across both sheets.  So players are tempted to watch what is happening on the next sheet as well as on their own.  After the third game Petroleum were sitting 3 for 3, but a disappointing performance in our final game against Banchory led to a 15-12 defeat.  This left Petroleum tied with Haddo on points, but the yellows finished ahead thanks to more ends and points difference.  Well skipped by Ian and Rhiann (who also won this competition last year), and well played by all the Petroleum members who made up their teams across the 4 games.

    

 

 

 

On 15th January the club played a competition where the skips were those who normally play third in the APCC league ; our regular skips moved down to lead ; and other players moved up a slot from their usual position.  This was the first time the Petroleum Thirds Competition had been held since 1998, when Ali Oag won it.  Four teams entered, and the format was three short games of three ends – so that each team played every other team.

The winner in convincing style was Sarah Glidden (with Rogan Milne, David Addison, and Ian Grigor), with 3 wins out of 3 (6 points).

The runner up was Phil Scott (with Steve Dyer, Maureen Melvin, and Dillan Perras), with 1 win 1 loss and 1 peel (3 points).

The other teams were skipped by Craig McNaughton and Rod MacKenzie.

Congratulations to Sarah and her team, and thanks to all members who took part.

On  22nd December (the last curling day of 2016) Dillan Perras and his team of Fraser Grant, Rod MacKenzie, and Brian Stewart secured victory of the club autumn league over second place Ronnie Whyte.  Throughout the autumn Dillan’s team set the pace, finishing with an impressive record of won 8 lost 1 peeled 1.  Well done.

      

Six new teams have now been communicated for the Spring league – good luck to all members with your New Year curling.

Six teams took part in the APCC Christmas bonspeil on Sunday 11th December.  Members played two four-end games, with the added complications of changing playing positions after each end and (for Dillan and Neva) of wearing a bushy white Santa beard and a pair of antlers.  Teams were skipped by Bill, Claire, Dillan, Ian, Rhiann, and Rod, and the overall winner was Club President Ian’s team which included Erica, Andy, and Philip. Well done to all.  After the game a meal of soup, turkey, and alchoholic cream (?) was enjoyed by all.  A Merry Christmas to all our website visitors !

 

 

 

 

A touring party from the US Womens Curling Association visited Curl Aberdeen on Sunday 20th November.  The tourists played against five local teams, one of which included Petroleum curlers Rosemary Morrison and Neva Haites.  In the morning Neva took some of the visitors on a tour of Aberdeen University’s estate in old Aberdeen, and after the match the visitors were entertained at a dinner with entertainment.  The Americans were made to feel welcome and a good time was had by all.  Well done ladies !

A team skipped by Ian Grigor entered the rink’s club bonspeil on Saturday 26th November.  After three 6-end games, including a very close encounter with Banchory, Petroleum emerged the winners with three wins.  One of the gameswas decide when Ian scored a 7 in the 5th end with two superb take out shots.  Congratulations to Ian and his team Ronnie Whyte, Rod McKenzie, and Malcolm Watson.

A successful club season was rounded off at our AGM which took place on 8th May, generously hosted by Neva and Roy Haites.  Possibly thanks to the first really warm sunshine of the year this event was very well attended – which kept Roy even busier than usual cooking up chicken wings, burgers, and sausages.   Iseabal organised a raffle which raised #173 towards club funds.   Thank you to members who brought along raffle prizes and a range of delicious puddings.  Thanks also to Roy for organising the post-AGM table tennis, volley ball, and boules.

After hearing reports on the season’s activities, the AGM elected Ian Grigor as club president and Rogan Milne as secretary.  Members expressed their thanks to Neva our outgoing president and to Richard Jachniq who stands down after many years’ service covering a number of committee roles.   Minutes will be issued in due course.

Prizes were awarded for the Autumn competition to Roy’s team which comprised Louise Edwards, Angie Anderson, Malcolm Watson, and Maureen Melvin.  The Spring trophy went to Bill Morrison’s team of Andy Carr, Sarah Glidden, Neva Haites, and Titus MacTavish.  For the first time there was also an award for the “Most  Improved Player of the Year” – which was presented by Rhiann Macleod to Chloe Grigor.  Well done all.

The Petroleum club Spring league has been completed and once again it was a very close finish with four teams in contention going into the last week.  Bill and Lorna both finished on 14 points having each won 7 and lost 3, with Bill ahead by a whisker having taken one more end across the competition.  Bill and his team will pick up their trophy at the club AGM in Bieldside on 8th May.  In between working the barbeque  and organising the sports Roy will also pick up a trophy – having won the 2015 Autumn  league.

We hope as many members as possible can make it to the AGM / barbeque.
