On 27th October Aberdeen Ladies Centre hosted a visiting tour from Sweden.  This was the tourists’ first game, having flown in the day before.  Four Swedish teams were met by two from Inverness and two from Aberdeen.  One of the home teams was skipped by Petroleum’s Rosemary Morrison, whose team comprised our own Gun Remahl plus Winnie Gillespie (Rubislaw) and Kay Lucas (Banchory).  Interestingly, Rosemary’s opponents included Monika Wranå, whose son Rasmus is currently playing second in the (unbeaten) Edin team at the European Championships  in Tallinn.

Rosemary’s team won their game, and the overall score in Aberdeen was Scotland 26 Sweden 22.  Well done ladies.  After visiting eight ice rinks the tourists’ final winning score was Sweden 235 Scotland 207.  Apologies for the late report.

The NE province held their first doubles competition on Saturday 17th November 2018.  The rules were similar to those for mixed doubles (see below), but there was no stipulation on players’ gender.  Two sections of six teams each played three 5-end games, using the schenkel system.

Petroleum entered two teams.  Rhiann Macleod and Ian Grigor topped the red section, winning all three of their games.  Philip Scott and Alistair Oag topped the blue section, but were level with Meldrum & Daviot and Aberdeen on 2 wins each,  and level with M&D on 10 ends each ; so the result was decided on shot difference.  Well done to winners Rhiann, Ian, Philip, and Alistair.

A Summary of doubles rules :

Doubles is played in teams of two curlers. Each end starts with a stone being placed on the centre line in the free guard zone (this is a stone of the team without hammer), a second stone is placed on the centre line at the back of the 4ft circle (this is a stone of the team with hammer). Each team then throws 5 stones with one curler throwing the first and the final stone, the other throwing the middle 3 stones. No Stones can be removed from play until the fourth stone of an end.

11 members competed in Petroleum’s annual club points competition which was held on 11th November.  In a two hour slot we managed to complete 7 of the 10 points disciplines.  Congratulations to runaway winner Sarah Glidden, who also organised the event.  And well done to everyone who took part.

On Friday 13th April a large contingent of Petroleum members turned out to say goodbye to Dave and Louise Edwards, who are moving south to North Berwick after 20 years in Aberdeen.

Ian Grigor planned an excellent itinerary that included drinks at Under the Hammer, dinner at Rusticos, and karaoke at McNasties.   After a good meal the departing couple were presented with a painting by the members, which hopefully will find a place in their new house and remind them of happy times in Aberdeen.  Louise bravely joined in the singing, with Dave providing moral support from the safety of the audience.  Ian proved that he really is a good musician.

Our loss will be Murrayfield Ice Rink’s gain – both have made a great contribution to curling in this area and they leave a gap that will be difficult to fill.

Congratulations to Dave Edwards who has won the A division of the Aberdeen superleague in his last game of curling in this area before moving on to pastures new.  Dave’s team of Scott Macleod, Rhiann Macleod, and Kenny Rae have now topped the superleague for 2 years running – a great achievement.   We hope you will be wearing your winner’s jacket at Murrayfield Dave !

Runners up were Dave Robertson’s team of Ian Grigor, Chris Inglis, and Sarah Glidden – well done to these Petroleum members also.

And in the D division Rod MacKenzie came top having only formed his new team at the beginning of this season.  Rod together with Philip Scott, Phil Townsend, Fraser Garrow, Chloe Grigor, and Fraser Grant will be competing in the C league next season, where we are confident that they will continue to do well.

With the conclusion of the 17-18 season for NE Province competitions we are pleased to report three wins for Petroleum teams.

Bill Morrison’s team of Rosemary, Phil S, Phil T, and Rod won the Province A division in a close final game against Banchory 2.   The whole competition came down to the last end of this game, in which Bill managed a steal to take the end, the game, and the league.  Outstanding.  Bill’s team will now represent NE Province in the inter-province competition next season.

The Province B league was won by Ian Grigor, ably supported by Rhiann, Chris, Sarah, and Fraser G – sorry no photo is available for this team who are all a bit shy.

The Province singles competition this season took the form of a round robin league, giving more games than the previous knockout format.  Once again Petroleum players were victorious with our team led by Rod MacKenzie lifting the trophy.  Rod’s singles team included Ian, Ronnie, Dillan, Phil S, Sarah, and Rhiann.  Well done all.

A full sweep for the club was prevented by Haddo CC, who beat Petroleum onto second place in the Double team competition.

This was a very strong performance for the club – well done to all the Petroleum members who contributed.  Prizes will be presented at the Province AGM on 26th April.

 

 

 

Yes, super-skip Dillan Perras has topped the Petroleum Club league in both autumn and spring competitions for the second year running.   In the autumn competition Dillan was supported by Cheryl, Lorna, and Malcolm ; and his Spring team comprised Sarah, Neva, Phil Scott, and Karen.  Trophies will be presented at the club AGM on 13th May.  Can Dillan be beaten ? … any (legal) suggestions to the secretary please.

Last week Curl Aberdeen hosted the World Juniors Curling competition.  10 men’s teams and 10 ladies’ teams took part, with the Scottish ladies’ team being skipped by local girl Rebecca Morrison. The men’s team skipped by Ross Whyte won silver medals.  The competition was a great success, with many visitors commenting on how well the event had been organised by the local team led by Ian Mennie.

Many Petroleum members supported the event as volunteer stewards, drivers, or timekeepers.  However, the highlight from our club’s point of view came during the spectacular opening ceremony.  Teams were led onto the ice by piper Jamie Kindness and then after a couple of short speeches the ceremonial first stone was delivered by rink manager Tom Brewster and swept by club members Dave Edwards and Rhiann Macleod, with Claire Perras holding the broom.  The commentator reminded us that all four of these curlers have previously represented Scotland at international level.   Luke Perras had the honour of carrying the Scottish flag and leading the home teams onto the ice.

Petroleum’s annual thirds competition took place on the 14th January.  The skips were members who normally play third in the club league, while the regular skips got a chance to practice their sweeping skills !

Four teams took part, in a format of three short games.  The skips were Rod, Lorna, Phil S, and Erika.  The teams were so well balanced that both first games were tied with the results being decided by last stone draws.  Congratulations to the winner Rod whose team of Rogan, Fraser, and Glynis won all their games in a tightly contested event.  Well done all.
